Olaf's Winter Snow Sign

For my project, I wanted to make something I could use to decorate our house.  Eliot and I are still getting settled, so we've decided to leave a lot of our decorations in storage this year.  Instead of making something just for Christmas, I decided to make it winter themed!  Now, we can enjoy it from now through February/March!!!

Of course, when I think of winter, I think of my favorite snowman Olaf!  I've had the idea to make a sign with a fishbowl as the "O" for a while now, and this was the perfect opportunity to finally bring it to life!  I love how it came out!

Want to make your own Olaf's Winter Snow Sign decoration?  Here's how I made it:

Materials:
Wooden Sign Base (I used one that was about 23" long)
"S", "N", and "W" Wood Letters
Wooden Circle Base
Fish Bowl (make sure it's about the same size as your wooden letters)
Acrylic Paints (shades of blue and turquoise, white)
Fake Textured Snow Paint
White Glitter
Olaf and Snowflake Buttons (I used the Disney Mickey snowflakes)
Newspaper (to cover your work area)
Black Craft Foam (I used thicker 1/4" foam that I found at Michael's)
Paint Brushes
Scissors
Hot Glue Gun

1.) Select Your Materials
This project requires selecting the correct proportion of materials.  First, you need a wooden base that will fit all of your wooden letters and the fish bowl.  Then, you also need to find a wooden circle base that covers the top of your fishbowl without falling into it.  Here's an example of how I checked my materials in my local craft store.

2.) Paint Your Bases and Letters
Paint your wooden base and the letters in your chosen color.  I decided to paint mine turquoise since it matches so much of the decor in our house.  For the base, I stuck with a dark blue color that would pop a little more against the snow.  I painted two coats on the top and one coat on the back.  Let the pieces dry completely.

3.) Glue Your Letters and Fish Bowl to Base
Once your paint is completely dry, use your hot glue gun to attach the letters to the base.  I laid them on the base where I wanted them positioned before putting glue on the letters and firmly pressing them into the base.  Once the letters are in their position, put some glue on your fish bowl and attach that.

Note: If your letters aren't flat, like mine, you might need something else to "prop" them up.  My "S" wasn't going to sit flat so I took a small piece of black craft foam and used it to hold the rest of the "S" up.  I cut out a random peanut shaped piece, painted it white, then glued it to the S before gluing both pieces to my wooden base.

4.) Add Extra Glue
After attaching the letters, I was worried that they might fall over.  I wanted to give the illusion of snow at the base, so I decided to cover the bottom front of the letters with a little more hot glue.  I used about 2 small sticks just making "snow" piles.  This also helped cover the foam I had to add to my "S" making the snow pile look more natural.

5.) Add Snow and Glitter
When the hot glue was finally dry, I used the textured snow paint to create the illusion of snow piles.  It has a consistency similar to a frosting so I carefully spread it over the little mounds using my paint brush.  This was the perfect way to cover the hot glue from attaching the letters.  I also added some to my circle base using a circular swirl motion to create a fun texture for the top of the fish bowl.  Once I was finished with the snow, I sprinkled a tiny bit of white glitter over all of the snow.  (Pay attention to the drying instructions: my snow takes about 24 hours to fully harden!)

6.) Attach Buttons
I used my Olaf buttons to decorate the letters a little.  I had a few places on my sign where it conveniently looked like Olaf was standing in the snow so I went with it.  Then, I added a few Mickey Mouse snowflake buttons for some extra Disney magic!

7.) Decorate Your Fish Bowl
Finally, the last part is to decorate your fish bowl.  I originally wanted to put an Olaf figure inside mine, but I couldn't find him.  You could put a figure, tsum tsum, candle, small plush, miniature scene, basically anything inside of the fish bowl.  The sky's the limit!  And, since it has a top, you could place something on top of it!  I played around with a snowflake ornament inside and then my Olaf plush on top!  But, I might change it around every few weeks.  Or, as a variation, you could replace the "O" fish bowl with a snow globe.  (You can usually find plastic ones at the craft store this time of year.)

Once you're settled on how to decorate it, you're done!  Find a place to show off your creation and enjoy Olaf's Winter Snow Sign!!!  °o°

Do You Wanna Freeze Your Butt Off?

Well, we're looking at another snowstorm this weekend.  Our section of Maine is supposed to be getting about 18-22 more inches.  (On top of the 2-3 feet we already have.)  I'm not really sure where we're going to put it.  We already can't open our second garage door.  There is no more room for snow in our driveway.  My little car is too small to see over the snow mounds.  Winter is getting old fast.

Photo Source: Disney (and my own lyrics)
But, I always try to look at the bright side of things.  I wrote this tonight to attempt to find some humor in it:

Do you wanna freeze your butt off?

Well just come and visit Maine.
We have a ton of snow, I won't "Let it Go."
Winter might drive me insane!
They expect another blizzard, what else is new?
Elsa please go away!!!
Do you wanna freeze your butt off?
(You'll really freeze your butt off.)
Winter die...

Ok, maybe winter doesn't have to die.  But it would be nice for it to let up a little bit.  I mean, enough is enough Elsa.  Could we please melt a bit of the snow we already have before we get more?  I really don't think that's too much to ask.

Or maybe we could tone it down on the huge storms?  It's really pretty when there's a few inches at a time.  Please?  Perhaps?  No... ok bye.  °o°

(Note: These memes are all over Pinterest and have been shared by all of us freezing in the Northeast.  I have no idea where they originally came from.)

Scrapbook Swap: Disney Christmas Layout

A few months ago, I joined another swap for my Disney Scrapbook Facebook group. As you may recall, I also did the Christmas in July Card swap last summer.  I had a blast and I wanted to participate in another swap during the holiday season!  I was lucky enough to sign up in time to participate in the Disney Christmas Layout Swap!

This was was for a two page Disney Christmas layout.  You had to sign up in the event in our Facebook group.  Next, you had to select which design you wanted to do.  There were 20 design choices, one for each member of the swap, and each member had to make a total of 20 cuts.  Once you finished your cuts, you had to place them each in a Ziplock bag.  Then you put all 20 baggies in one larger Ziploc bag and mailed the entire package to the swap organizer.  (We paid her $5.95 for postage to receive our package with all of the other members' cuts in return.)

Some of the choices to pick from included: Santa & Mrs. Claus, Christmas tree, Candy canes, Gingerbread, Stockings, Presents, Elf, Snowman, Wreath, Snowflakes, Ribbon, Title or a Border.  I chose frames since that choice seemed like it would be pretty easy. (I still don't know how to work my Cricut so I wanted to stay away from things I couldn't cut by another method!)  I had to make two frames per person- or 40 total.  I decided to make glitter backgrounds to "frame" photos with.  Who doesn't love glitter right?

Frozen is really popular (obviously) so I made a winter snowflake themed frame.

For my second design, I made a Christmas frame with Mickey Mouse ornaments!  I love how cute the Mickey ornaments came out!  (My Mickey paper punch is my hero!!!)

I've been anxiously waiting for my package so I could show you the items I received from the swap!  The package finally came in the mail yesterday and I'm so happy with everything!!!  I love all of the designs.  These ladies are so creative!  This is a great way to get ideas for new designs to use in my own scrapbook designs!  I really need to get working on that Cricut.  I can see myself having way too much fun with that!

Here are a few of my favorites from the swap!  I love the little Mickey parts on the Christmas tree!  That's such a great idea!  The stockings and wreath are also adorable. My favorite is the Mickey Christmas light border.  (You know I'm a sucker for Christmas lights!)  These are going to look great with my new Disney holiday papers!  I can't wait to join more layout and die cut swaps!!!  My Disney scrapbooks are going to rock!  °o°

Frozen Ice Palace

This past weekend, Eliot and I went on a Frozen Christmas adventure!

I've been wanting to do something to get into the Christmas spirit.  Eliot and I have been really busy the past month and we still haven't gotten much decorating done around the house.  We thought about putting more decorations up over the weekend, but we decided to go on an overnight getaway instead.  For months now, I've been begging anyone and everyone in my family to go to the Yankee Candle Flagship Store in Massachusetts.  I haven't been in 10 years- since my 20th birthday.  Christmas is a great time to visit.  Then, in November, I'd heard about a Frozen Ice Palace at the Westfarms Mall in Connecticut.  (Hmm... they're only an hour away from each other... perfect!  The adventure begins!)

Eliot and I drove down to Hartford late Saturday afternoon to stay at a hotel near the Westfarms Mall.  Sunday morning, we got up and went over to the mall.  On the way over, we saw a Christmas display with Tigger and Eeyore!  (So cute!!!)

As soon as we arrived at the mall, I knew it was going to be a good day.  We saw a lady with a Sulley hat on in the parking lot.  The family walking into the mall in front of us had WDW sweatshirts on.  We entered the mall in JCPenney right next to the Disney section.  Finally, I saw a man with a Disney Store bag walking through JCPenney.  (Wait, what?  This mall even has a Disney Store!?!?!  Woo-hoo!!!)

We saw signs for the Ice Palace as soon as we got inside.  We made our way to the center of the mall and found the 30 foot ice palace.  The Frozen Ice Palace theme was designed to coincide with the November 18th release of the Frozen Sing-Along Edition of the movie.  The display was locally sponsored by the Hartford Courant.

Eliot and I got into line and it wasn't that bad.  We weren't there as early as we'd planned to be, but the line was still only half way down the first loop.  (By the time we left, it was almost all the way down the second one- probably a 2+ hour wait.)  We probably waited about an hour to an hour and a half.  Thankfully, I was there to see the display so I took a lot of pictures and kept myself busy dissecting the design aspects.

I loved the Ice Palace.  It had great details of snowflakes on it.  It was great how the columns and arches changed colors every few seconds.  My favorite part of the display were the snow globes.  There were a few snow globes scattered throughout the design.  One had Elsa, one had Olaf, and another had Anna, Kristoff, Sven and Olaf!

There were interactive activities throughout the display while waiting in line.  Some of the kids played with the karaoke machine.  (Cute until they started screaming into it.) You could leave a hand print in the snow at the Icy Hand Print experience.  (Brr!)  Or you could see how tall you were compared to Olaf and Sven!  (Fun!)

Once you were inside the Ice Palace, you could watch televisions with clips from the Frozen sing along.  They only showed a few sections of each song.  I wish they played the entire song.  I was surprised none of the kids were singing with the songs.  The only people I heard singing were Eliot and me!  (Because we're cool like that.)

The Ice Palace also had "snow" falling from the center.  There was a projector with a snowflake on the floor near where the snow fell.  The kids in line loved it.  In fact, a few of them were completely covered in it.  However, it wasn't real snow- so it wouldn't melt.  (Not such a great idea to roll in it before your photo op kids!)  The Ice Palace was really cute though.

After the Ice Palace, you had the option to have a photo taken with a plush Olaf at the Ice Throne.  This sounded like a must do to me, until we realized you had to buy a Santa package and it was an add on.  If you could just do the Ice Throne, I would have been all over that!  (I like warm hugs Olaf!!!)

Santa Claus was waiting at the end of the ice palace display.  Eliot and I let the mother and son behind us go through and we snuck past Santa.  We didn't want to pay for the full photo package.  Although, part of me was curious about the "special gift" Santa handed out afterwards.  (Aww man!  It was a Frozen look and find book!)

After Santa, there was a small "gift shop" with Frozen merchandise.  Eliot bought me a small Olaf make up bag and an Olaf back pack.  (Early Christmas Gifts!)  Both were half off the original prices!  (Score!)  We think they were just trying to get rid of it since there were only a few more days until Christmas!

We went upstairs and took a few photos of the display from above.  Then we made our way over to the Disney Store.  (Yay!)  We went to a few other stores and had lunch before leaving the mall.  I'm so glad we went; I had a blast.  (I'm a dork and I know it!)

After we left the mall, Eliot and I traveled an hour north to the Yankee Candle Village store.  We poked around and shopped for a few hours.  The best part of the store is that it's an experience all on it's own.  The store reminds me of a miniature Walt Disney World.  (Hey, a girl's gotta get her fix somehow.)  We checked out the Wax Works section where kids (and adults!) can make their own wax hands or jar candles.  There's even a show with animatronics like the Country Bears at Disney!

We also explored the Bavarian Village and Black Forest.  The Bavarian Village is a German-style village where it’s Christmas year round.  The Black Forest has Christmas collectibles like ceramic villages.  (I had to get a few pictures for ideas on how to display Nana's village at my parents' house!)  It also snows every 4 minutes.

We took pictures around the Nutcracker Castle and explored Santa's Workshop!  The countdown clock was there to remind Santa he only has 3 more days until Christmas! Eventually, we selected our merchandise and paid for it before starting the three hour car ride home.  (Totally worth it!)  The weekend was a lot of fun and I'm really glad we went!  I definitely felt the Christmas spirit!  °o°

Fun Find: Disney Snowman Holiday Card

Do you want to build a snowman?

Photo Source: Disney Greeting Card Creator
Well, now you can!  Here's another fun find that I discovered while scrolling down my Facebook newsfeed.  Disney has created an online greeting card creator where you can "build" your own snowman and animated Frozen inspired greeting card to share with your family and friends!  Click here to build a snowman!

Photo Source: Disney Greeting Card Creator
You are greeted with an envelope and a "greeting card".  Once you click the snowflake, the animated card shows you graphics of Cinderella Castle from Walt Disney World, a ship representing the Disney Cruise Line, Sleeping Beauty Castle from Disneyland, Aulani in Hawaii and Norway from Adventures by Disney.

There is lively music playing while you watch your animated card.  It reminds me of the music from Frozen.  I also love the rosemaling patterns that are consistent with the designs in the movie!  I absolutely love those little details!!!

Elsa and Olaf then appear.  Elsa blows the snowflake and uses her magic to help you build your very own snowman!  You can make all sorts of different snowmen.  I love all of the accessories!  You can pick from pirate hats, scarves, fairy wings, Santa hats, antlers, a Mickey ear hat, and more!
