A Shop Refresh

I'm definitely in a mood for refreshing things as of late.  Between working toward finishing the house and preparing to update my blog, I want to redesign everything.

I've been playing around with updating my Facebook cover photo for a while now.  In fact, I started a Canva account a few months ago.  However, I never took the time to finish it as I kept getting stuck design wise.  After working with Elissa a few weeks ago and using Canva to help make her blog header, I felt more confident and decided it was time to get back to my abandoned project so I spent that weekend playing with it.

First, I went back to the draft of my new HEH Facebook cover.  After a few layout revisions, I was ready to add photos.  Then, I changed the font of the text to a fun, somewhat bold font.  I added the "making 3D printed mouse ears since 2015" to the bottom- both for good measure and since I'm very proud of that fact and I wanted to make it stand out.  Before I knew it, my new Facebook cover photo was done and uploaded online!  But I still wanted to design more...

Naturally, the next thing I wanted to do was update my Etsy banner to reflect the same design as my new cover photo.  For the most part, both of our Etsy shops are in a good place, but one thing that has needed some TLC is our Etsy shop banners.  Both shops have been a little bit neglected in that aspect.  Eliot deleted his banner once he started selling our 3D printed items last year.  (His old photo was of soap and since we're not selling that right now, he didn't want to mislead people.)  Happily Ever Hatter has had the same logo that I designed way back when I first started the company seven years ago.  It's a bit tired and old... plus, I'm not sure that anyone can actually see the hats I tried to make the letters into.  (The "H", "E" and "H" are supposed to look like mini Mickey and Minnie top hats.)  Thus, I decided it was time to update those.

I used my cover photo as the basis of the design for the Etsy banner.  After adding an additional photo to account for the wider layout, I formatted the text- keeping the same text from the cover photo.  Then, I found photos that fit the layout and I was done!

After that, I knew Eliot needed a new Etsy banner too.  I decided it wasn't worth it to reinvent the wheel so I copied over my Happily Ever Hatter Etsy banner.  However, I did make a few changes to the layout to account for the wider photos of the desk set, and the taller photos of the pen holders.  Then, I changed his background to teal (Go Sharks!) which I knew he would like.  I found another font to use and got his approval on it.  Finally, I found photos that fit in the layout.  Now, he has a Etsy banner again!

Then, last week, I've been working on square photos that I can use as "ads" for both my blog update, as well as for Elissa's blog.  (She's asked us to send photos to put on her blog too!)  I pretty much used the same process to create those.  I started with the square template and then added the elements from both my cover photos and shop banners.  I made sure to find photos from Happily Ever Hatter that were bright and vibrant in order to catch peoples' eyes.  For Snowblade Creations, I also found colorful photos that I thought would draw attention in to the photo.  It was a little harder since the photos are smaller, but I think I achieved my mission.

Finally, I decided that I'd finish my shop refresh by creating a new Facebook cover photo for Snowblade Creations.  This past Sunday, while Eliot and I watched the NHL's outdoor hockey game at Tahoe, I played around with layouts.  I could have used the same layout as Happily Ever Hatter but wanted something a little bit different.  Since we have so many new desk products I decided to create a layout that would showcase as many as possible.  After a spending quite a bit of time playing around with the sizes of the boxes, I finally found a balance between small and large (see below).  Then, I went through our photos and added a wide variety of our products to the design.

I am so excited about these designs.  It might not seem like much, but this is a HUGE moment for me.  I have missed my Adobe InDesign software terribly and this makes me feel like I have it back to a degree.  This works very similarly to that in that it's easy to see markers where elements line up with each other.  You can also input photos into the template.  But it's different in that you can use their library of templates to design your own.  It's so much faster than starting from scratch!  I haven't upgraded to the Canvo Pro version, but I'm really tempted to.  This will be such a huge help for our businesses that I'm really leaning toward paying to upgrade it!

The best part is that it will be really easy to change our cover photos and banners for the holidays.  I'm always impressed when Etsy shops update their banners to reflect the current season.  Online, your Etsy Shop Banner is the only "storefront" decoration you really have.  I've been known to change our Facebook cover photos seasonally, especially since it's literally just changing to a different photo of our ears.

These new cover photos and banners will allow us to have more flexibility with these changes.  For Christmas, I can make a green backdrop for Happily Ever Hatter and fill the photos with our holiday mouse ear designs.  (I made a quick example using photos from our new holiday ears from last summer.)  For Halloween, we can have black with orange text and Halloween ears.  And I can do the same for each of the seasons and holidays.  For Snowblade Creations, I can update photos if we have products to match, or I can simply change the background and text colors to reflect the season.

The possibilities are endless.  I'm really excited about these small updates to our shops and all that we'll be able to do with the designs in the future.  Every time I open our websites, I now feel a sense of refresh and renewal.  It's a wonderful feeling.  °o°

Quest of Learning

Well friends, it appears as though I've gone down another rabbit hole... I just spent most of my afternoon exploring other online courses available on uDemy and now I find myself enrolled in seven more!  Just under two weeks ago, I wrote a post about signing up for two online classes through uDemy.  Since then, I've periodically looked on their website for other classes to take.  My wishlist has been growing ever since.

I'm really excited to have another way of learning.  I've always loved taking all of my in person adult education classes.  Since no one is taking any classes in person right now, this is another new way to explore.  I love getting new knowledge of crafting techniques and learning new skills.  My favorite part is that I can do them when I have time to.  That's the beauty of online classes- websites like uDemy and Skillshare offer you a way to take an online class, at home, on your own schedule.

Last night, I realized that uDemy was having another sale on classes starting at only $10.99.  Thus, I started to browse on my cell phone before bed and I found a few that I wanted to take.  Today, I went onto my laptop and really dove in.  I put a ton of classes on my wishlist, and then picked my top seven classes that were on sale to purchase.

This is what I ended up purchasing for classes:

Mixed Media Painting Workshop - I've always been fascinated by different painting techniques.  I'm really excited to explore this some more!

Abstract Techniques Revealed to Create Large Modern Art - I've been wanting to learn how to create larger works of art as well.  I think these two painting classes will be fun!

Resin Geode Basics - Eliot and I have already taken a few resin geode classes in person and I've loved those so much!  I saw this class and decided it would be fun to potentially learn some more new techniques.  I really want to start making these- once I can go back to Michael's to purchase supplies.

Creativity and Relaxation Through Quilling - I've always been fascinated by 3D paper art.  Quilling is a technique of curling paper to create designs and I've wanted to learn this skill for a while now.  I'm thinking that this will be a relaxing craft to do if these weeks of "social distancing" turn into months.

Learn Calligraphy with Crayola Markers - My Grammie gave me a few calligraphy pens back when I was in high school.  At the time, I wasn't really into it.  However, over the years and through studying text and design, I've grown to appreciate the art.  I begged my parents for a few Crayoligraphy sets for Christmas a few years ago.  (Crayoligraphy is the art of calligraphy but with using Crayola markers!)  I was so excited when I saw them waiting for me on Christmas morning!  Of course, I've been super busy and still haven't used any of it yet.  This class will be the perfect addition to my sets.

How to Create Blogger Blogs - I wanted to explore a few classes that weren't just for creative fun.  I was curious if they had classes on blogging and I was excited when this popped up.  I'm pretty familiar with Blogger as I've used it all these years.  However, if there are new things I can learn to make my blog better, I'm all for it!

French for Beginners - It dawned on me this afternoon that there might be language classes on uDemy.  I've never been able to take an adult education language class because they always fell on days when I was working.  Plus, I've already taken three years of French in high school and I was pretty good by the end of it.  What I really need is a good refresh and I'm hoping this will get me back into it.  (Re-learning French has been on my personal goal list for the past few years, so I'm really going to try!)  I also found another French class that has six class sections.  The same instructor also teaches five sections of Italian, so I might move on to those after I finish this class!  I've always wanted to learn Italian too!

As you can see, I'm continuing on my quest of learning!  The greatest part was that I got all of those classes for under $80 and I saved $195 from the regular price!!!  All of my classes were only $10.99 except for one at $11.99 and another at $12.99.  (They were regularly priced from $24.99 to $49.99.)  I usually pay anywhere from about $40-$65 for one adult education class, so I thought this was a great deal!

If you're bored out of your mind and you need something to do during this time "socially distancing" yourself at home, consider checking out both uDemy and Skillshare and take an online class to pass the time!  Come join me on my quest of learning!!! °o°

Getting My Learning On Through Online Classes

Well, something good has come out of navigating the uncharted waters that we're all going through.  Last night, I finally did something that I've been talking about doing for a few years now- I signed up for some online classes that I've been interested in.

I've talked about taking other in person adult education classes over the past few years while living here in Maine.  Some of my favorite classes so far have been sewing, resin ink, resin geodes and acrylic paint pouring.  When I lived in Massachusetts, I took many classes including cake decorating, jewelry making, chocolate making, silk-scarf painting, spa night, soap making, doing makeup and working with polymer clay.  There aren't as many options available here in Maine.  I get excited every time the new class schedules come out.  (I've been known to stalk the adult ed websites.)  Sometimes, there are fun new class options and other times I'm left feeling a little disappointed.

That's the beauty of online classes.  Websites like uDemy and Skillshare offer you a way to take an online class, at home, on your own schedule.  I've been considering it for a while now; I just never jumped in.  Last night, I went onto uDemy and signed up for a few classes that I've wanted to take for years.  (You read that correctly... years.)

Back in 2014, I wrote my first Blog and Disney Goals post.  That's when I first shared my desire to take a class on storyboarding.  While I didn't sign up for the class that I'd originally planned to, I found Learn to Storyboard for Film or Animation and I signed up for that class instead.  I've always been fascinated with that part of making a film so what better way to explore that more than with a class on it!

The other class that I've wanted to take forever was a Theme Park Design class.  This one requires a little bit of a backstory...

As you know, I've always dreamed of becoming an Imagineer.  When I got to choose a senior design project for my interior design degree, I wanted to design a theme park or at least a resort, but my professor told me that was too big and too ambitious.  Instead, I opted to design a small cruise ship.  I could still design hotel rooms, a restaurant, bar, etc. without the project becoming overwhelming.  (Hindsight is 20/20 and I'm thankful that I was talked out of the bigger design.)  I enjoyed the cruise ship project, but I've always had the dream to design something bigger lingering at the back of my mind.

Then, when I graduated from college, it was August of 2008 and the economy was plummeting at an alarming speed.  (Sound familiar?)  I spent months trying to get a good job that I actually enjoyed.  During my many days of job hunting, I started to do research about online classes to take to diversify.  I was terrified that I'd never get an interior design job.  (Who wanted to hire an interior designer when the economy was crap?)  I found classes for wedding planning, landscape architecture and more.  One day, I stumbled across Steve Alcorn's Theme Park Design book and his website.  It was then that I discovered he taught theme park design classes online.

The problem was that the class I found was like $300-$400.  A broke, right-out-of-college kid couldn't afford it, so I put a pin in it for the time being.  This class sat on my Christmas Wish List for many years before I totally set the idea aside.  Recently, I've had a growing desire to explore that path again.  Will I become a Theme Park Designer or Imagineer?  No, but I love theme parks and design and it will be a fun way to learn more.  Eliot and I still talk about things we'd love to design for Disney and I have this wonderful little corner of the internet that's a perfect spot to share some of our ideas.

Thus, I find myself enrolled in both Theme Park Design and Learn to Storyboard.  And the best news of all was that both of these classes were on sale for a St. Patrick's Day promotion!  They were on sale for $12.99 each.  I'm getting hours of education in two classes for less than $26.  That's a deal if I ever saw one!!!

I'm hoping to make myself a schedule so I can set aside time to do each of these classes during a specific time each week.  I love how my Tuesdays are dedicated to my sewing class and that I can look forward to it each week.  I'm hoping scheduling them will keep me on track and it will also give me breaks throughout the week!

If you're bored and trying to find something to do during these next few weeks while stuck "socially distancing" at home, consider checking out uDemy and Skillshare to take a class and pass the time!  There are tons of different classes to choose from depending on what interests you... and you don't even have to get off your couch! °o°

December 2017 Calendar

Another year is almost over.  I'm not quite sure how this happened.  I feel like I just sat down to write my 2017 goals and here we sit at the beginning of December.  This year has admittedly been a crazy one, but I'm thankful for all of the doors that have opened as a result of the crazy.  Plus, it's not quite over yet... my favorite time of the year is just beginning!  This year, I kick off December by heading to Disneyland later today!  Here's to a wonderful December and holiday season!

Like last year, I've also made a blank version of the 2017 calendar without the holidays to make them more versatile.  Over the past 4 years, my calendars have been used for lots of things including: Disney trip countdowns, teachers' Disney themed classrooms, training calendars for runDisney events and to surprise kids with a Disney vacation!

November 2017 Calendar

Hello November... how on earth is it November?  Here we are again, 4 days into the month and I'm FINALLY posting this.  Eliot and I have continued to burn the candle at both ends.  In fact, I just woke up from a nap.  Yep, a three hour nap.  In the middle of the day.  From 3:00-6:00 pm.  It's sad when you wake up to nighttime.  After Daylight Savings falls back tonight, it will be nighttime a lot sooner too.  Boo.

I still haven't had a chance to make the 2018 calendars.  I'm going do those tonight or tomorrow.  Not because I finally have time, but out of necessity.  Eliot and I have a VERY busy November ahead of us... filled with lots of good things, but it's going to be insanely busy.  So, I'll have to get the calendars done or they won't get done at all.  (If you're waiting on an email, you should have that soon!)

Anyways... speaking of November, here are my calendars!!!

October 2017 Calendar

Well, here we are in October.  You know it's been a busy month when I haven't even posted anything since last month's calendar, and it's already 6 days into the new month.  (I'm so sorry for the delay... I completely forgot to post this on the 1st.)  Eliot and I continue to be very busy with Happily Ever Hatter.  We've had some milestone moments over the past month that I'd like to share, so hopefully I'll be back soon to tell you about those.  Also, I still haven't had a chance to make the 2018 calendars, but I'm hoping to get to those soon.  For now, here's October.  Better late than never, right?

September 2017 Calendar

Hi friends!  It's been another busy month!  How is it already September?!?  This year, today marks a special occasion as it's the year the "19 Years Later" epilogue takes place in the Harry Potter series.  Perhaps, that's why I'm more aware of the date.  (At least this time around I remembered to post on the first of the month!)  For those of you asking, I haven't made the 2018 calendars yet, but I'll be working on those soon.  In the meantime, here's my free September printable calendar!

June 2017 Calendar

Happy June everyone!  I can't believe it's already June.  In fact, other than knowing that yesterday was my Dad's birthday, it totally escaped me that it was a new month.  I thought about the calendar, and then by the end of the work day it had completely slipped my mind.  Here it is!  I'm so sorry for the delay!

March 2017 Calendar

Hello March!  Now that we're back from our Walt Disney World trip, I'm looking forward to spring time here in Maine!  We've still got quite a ways to go, and March sometimes has a tendency to drag.  Thankfully, there are plenty of things to keep us busy.  This month, I'm really looking forward to St. Patrick's Day, which is also the day the live action Beauty and the Beast is released!  Here's a calendar to help you count down!

Hey Friends!  I'm alive!  I'm sorry I've been away for the past three weeks.  If I thought Eliot and I were busy before, I guess I had no idea.  Things are great, we've just been extra, super, crazy, busy.  Between work, training for the Princess Half and making ears, I've barely had time to sleep let alone get onto my computer!  I know it's a few days into the month, but here's my printable Mickey and Minnie calendar!  (Finally!!!)

Here's the link to download the February 2017 PDF version of the printable.

Feel free to link this post up to Pinterest or Facebook so your friends and family can have a fun Mickey and Minnie calendar too!  Let's spread the Disney Magic!!!  °o°

Note: I've made calendars through 2017.  I don't post the PDF links on my blog until the beginning of each month.  If you're looking for a particular month and would like me to email it to you ahead of my post going live, you can send my blog an email at mydisneylifeblog[at]gmail.com.  I'll send you the PDFs directly as soon as I can!  :-)
