2017 Year in Review

As the final hours of 2017 wind down, I thought I'd take a few minutes to catch my breath and to look back at this year.  Clearly, I haven't posted much at all... I went from 163 posts in 2017 to only 43 in 2017.  That's in direct correlation to the amount of free time I've had this year.  (In fact, I type this as I forgo watching my beloved New England Patriots in order to have time to type this up.)

2017 can best be described as a rollercoaster.  Eliot and I got on it in February and we haven't gotten off of it since.  Happily Ever Hatter has had a breakout year.  It's always kept me busy... but this year, we took it to new levels.  It's hard to describe, but I'll try to put it in perspective.  We've had well over 300 sales.  Our revenue this past year was 10 times the amount I've ever had in a single year.  The week before Christmas we mailed out 37 packages... totaling more than 50 ears.  We've still got a few open orders, and we haven't seen this number of outstanding orders since we hit it big in February.  It's been very overwhelming, but at the same time very humbling.

Since I haven't been able to post, I thought I'd try to at least get on here to do a quick recap of our 2017.  It's definitely been a busy year, but it's also been a great one.

2017 Year In Review:

January- Looking back, January was the calm before the storm we didn't even know was coming.  We spent New Years in New Hampshire with my brother Jeremy, Mom, Dad and Nana.  We worked on a few new ear designs.  I desperately tried to train for the Princess Half Marathon weekend.  We worked on the house some more.

February- My New England Patriots won the Super Bowl!  We went to see the San Jose Sharks play the Boston Bruins.  Eliot and I worked hard to make a large batch of 3D printed ear samples for our trip to Walt Disney World.  We went to WDW for the Princess Half Marathon weekend.  We returned to about 20 Etsy orders, and little did we know it at the time, but our lives had changed.

March- We took a break from ears to watch my alma mater, MDI High School, win the boys basketball State Championship!  We went to see the live action Beauty and the Beast as soon as it came out!  And then we went to see it again.

April- I met up with my Key to the World Travel girlfriends from Maine and we had lunch one afternoon.  Jeremy came up to visit Easter weekend.  Eliot and I tried to work on the house in between orders and making new designs.  We closed our Etsy shop for a few weeks to get caught up on orders.

May- We worked really hard to make a few new designs to debut in Disneyland.  Mid-month, we went to California for the Tinker Bell Half Marathon weekend.  We got tons of compliments on our ears from other guests and cast members.  We re-opened the shop and had our biggest sales month of the entire year.  Our Disneyland ears sold out immediately after release and were a huge hit!

June- We went to Painting with a Twist to celebrate the release of Beauty and the Beast on DVD.  Other than that, we pretty much spent the month working on ears.

July- I went home to visit my family for July 4th weekend.  Meanwhile, Eliot flew out to California to go skiing with his family.  (Yes, snow skiing in July.)  Although, it was a quick weekend, it was a much needed break!  We returned to pump out tons of orders and new designs.  In the middle of the month, we went to California for the D23 Expo and to visit Disneyland.  We had such a good time!

August- In August, we closed our shop for a few weeks to catch up on orders.  We realized that we hadn't done many "summery" things.  Therefore, we went on a weekend adventure to visit Six Flags New England and the giant Yankee Candle store.

September- I started taking a sewing class through the adult education program.  I was so excited to finally learn!  At the end of the month, my parents went on their Disney Cruise to Bar Harbor.  I took care of Nana and then we met up with them the day they came into port into Bar Harbor.  It was the Disney Cruise Line's maiden voyage to Bar Harbor and it was a truly magical experience.

October- Eliot and I said goodbye to our local bowling alley when it closed.  We went up to visit my parents and spent the weekend exploring Acadia National Park.  October 18th, Eliot sliced his finger open while printing ears.  We made a midnight run to the hospital for stitches and a tetanus shot.  We slowed down with the ears, but still cranked out quite a few.  I won the Chiropractic Assistant of the Year award at my annual conference.  On the 26th, we went to Boston with Elissa to watch the San Jose Sharks and Boston Bruins game.  Eliot and Elissa's Dad Rick surprised us by flying out for it.  At the end of the month, we had a horrible wind storm and my work didn't have power and was closed the 30th and 31st.

November- I wore my Halloween outfit to work on November 1st in protest of Mother Nature and her storm.  I finished my sewing class and made a Beauty and the Beast pillowcase for myself as my final project.  Eliot went to Disneyland for less than 48 hours for the Avengers Half Marathon weekend.  We had our first snowfall.  We worked really hard on ear before we had to leave for my birthday trip.  We went to Walt Disney World for Dapper Day, Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party and to celebrate my 33rd birthday.  It was an amazing trip!  We returned Thanksgiving day and I spent that with my family.  We worked overtime on ears because I was only home for 8 days...

December- December 1st, I flew out to California with Jeremy to visit Disneyland and for my KeyCon 2017 travel agent conference.  I had so much fun reconnecting with my travel agent friends.  Jeremy had a blast on his first trip to Disneyland.  I returned home the 11th.  Eliot and I made the final push to finish ears for the holidays.  We finished and mailed out more ears than either of us thought possible.  We went to my parents' house for Christmas.  And this week we've been finishing up those final orders and trying to enjoy the rest of our holiday break before we re-open mid-January.  Tonight, Jeremy is visiting and we're going out to dinner and to finally see the new Star Wars movie!  Then, we'll ring in the new year while watching the New York City ball and Walt Disney World fireworks at home.

Which brings us to 2018...

What's next for us in 2018?  Well, most importantly, we've been working to re-structure a few things with
Happily Ever Hatter.  We really enjoy making new designs and we haven't been able to focus on that the past few months.  Now that we're almost caught up, we're hoping we can stay ahead of things... but I guess we'll see how that turns out!  We've got a lot of new things planned for 2018!  I'm excited to see what's in store!

We're hoping to have a little more personal time for ourselves.  This past year, I've felt guilty every time we've taken a break.  But, I've also realized that it's necessary in order to live happy and fulfilling lives.  I still don't think that I'll have much time to blog, but I'll do it when I can.  I'm hopeful that someday I'll be working at home full time, and that this will become a bigger part of my life once again.

We're hoping to launch two businesses next year.  One of them, I've been trying to take the time to launch for a while now.  In 2018, I'm jumping in.  It's another passion of mine, and I don't see the point in waiting.  The other business is something Eliot and I have talked about in the past, but we decided this year that we wanted to commit.  So stay tuned for more information on both of those in the coming year!

Finally, we've got a lot of goals for 2018.  Obviously, we're hoping to get back to Walt Disney World, Disneyland and on a Disney Cruise!  I've also got a list of goals that I'm hoping to accomplish.  I usually post them on here, but since I've barely scratched the surface of my 2017 goals, I'm going to forgo posting the same things all over again.

I'm very hopeful for 2018.  I'm sure it'll be another adventure!

Cheers to another wonderful year.  Goodbye 2017!  Hello 2018!!!  °o°

December 2017 Calendar

Another year is almost over.  I'm not quite sure how this happened.  I feel like I just sat down to write my 2017 goals and here we sit at the beginning of December.  This year has admittedly been a crazy one, but I'm thankful for all of the doors that have opened as a result of the crazy.  Plus, it's not quite over yet... my favorite time of the year is just beginning!  This year, I kick off December by heading to Disneyland later today!  Here's to a wonderful December and holiday season!

Like last year, I've also made a blank version of the 2017 calendar without the holidays to make them more versatile.  Over the past 4 years, my calendars have been used for lots of things including: Disney trip countdowns, teachers' Disney themed classrooms, training calendars for runDisney events and to surprise kids with a Disney vacation!

Disneyland Tomorrow!

December 1st is a very important day Pascal!  Tomorrow afternoon, my brother Jeremy and I board our plane and start our Disneyland adventure!  I'm so excited!

While the main reason for our trip is for KeyCon 2017, my annual travel agent conference with Key to the World Travel, I can't help but be super excited to show Jeremy around Disneyland.  He's never been before, and I'm basically falling over myself with excitement and anticipation of showing him around.  I'm so excited, that earlier this week, I made a list... and it just keeps growing.  Plus, I'll probably think of more things to add to it once we get out there.

So, instead of a bucket list for myself, I've made one for this trip of things to show Jeremy or stories to tell him about Disneyland.  I won't bore you with the whole list (which is more than twice this long), but here are a few things I plan to do:

World of Color
New Fantasmic
Mickey and the Magical Map
Frozen Musical
Indiana Jones Ride
Radiator Springs
Haunted Mansion Holiday Overlay
It's a Small World Christmas Overlay
Walt's Candle
Club 33
Meet Oswald
Little Man of Disneyland
Toontown
Goofy's Kitchen
Disneyland Candy Canes

What are your must do's when you visit Disneyland and California Adventure?  Am I forgetting anything?  What should we do first?  I'm thinking a castle photo...

We're staying at the Disneyland Hotel, so we'll be close to all of the magic!  Therefore, this trip shouldn't be as much of a whirlwind as Eliot's and my Walt Disney World trip a few days ago was.  I'm hoping to post on social media more often, stay tuned!!!  °o°

Surprise!

Hi friends!  It's been way too long, I know.  I'm still struggling to balance work, Happily Ever Hatter and "adulting" and it's gotten crazier than it was before.  Eliot and I have reached heights that I never thought Happily Ever Hatter would reach... and it's all been a bit overwhelming.  I'll tell you more about that soon...

However, today I'm finally taking a few minutes to let you all know that we're having another Coast to Coast adventure!  Well, Eliot's half way done with his... he went to visit his family at Disneyland during the Avengers Half Marathon Weekend last weekend, but I'm just starting mine!  I can't believe it's taken me so long to tell you...

Eliot and I will be at Walt Disney World from November 16th to the 22nd to celebrate my 33rd birthday!  I've always wanted to go to Disney for my birthday, so this is a dream come true for me.  I couldn't be more excited!  While we're there, it'll also be Dapper Day, we have tickets to two Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party events, the Christmas decorations will be up and I'll be there on my actual birthday.  Ahh!!!

Then, we get home, have Thanksgiving, visit with family, make A LOT of ears, and on Friday December 1st, my brother Jeremy and I are jetting off to Disneyland until December 10th!  I don't think I told you, but KeyCon 2017 is at Disneyland!!!  They wanted us to see all of the holiday decorations and I could not be more excited!

So, in the next few weeks, I'll be at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland, for the holiday season, seeing all of the decorations, parades, special shows and fireworks, and just soaking in the magic of the season.  I can't wait!!!

I grew up learning that hard work pays off... this is our payoff.  It's been an entire year coming... but we've busted our butts and earned this one.  Time to celebrate!!!  °o°

November 2017 Calendar

Hello November... how on earth is it November?  Here we are again, 4 days into the month and I'm FINALLY posting this.  Eliot and I have continued to burn the candle at both ends.  In fact, I just woke up from a nap.  Yep, a three hour nap.  In the middle of the day.  From 3:00-6:00 pm.  It's sad when you wake up to nighttime.  After Daylight Savings falls back tonight, it will be nighttime a lot sooner too.  Boo.

I still haven't had a chance to make the 2018 calendars.  I'm going do those tonight or tomorrow.  Not because I finally have time, but out of necessity.  Eliot and I have a VERY busy November ahead of us... filled with lots of good things, but it's going to be insanely busy.  So, I'll have to get the calendars done or they won't get done at all.  (If you're waiting on an email, you should have that soon!)

Anyways... speaking of November, here are my calendars!!!

October 2017 Calendar

Well, here we are in October.  You know it's been a busy month when I haven't even posted anything since last month's calendar, and it's already 6 days into the new month.  (I'm so sorry for the delay... I completely forgot to post this on the 1st.)  Eliot and I continue to be very busy with Happily Ever Hatter.  We've had some milestone moments over the past month that I'd like to share, so hopefully I'll be back soon to tell you about those.  Also, I still haven't had a chance to make the 2018 calendars, but I'm hoping to get to those soon.  For now, here's October.  Better late than never, right?

September 2017 Calendar

Hi friends!  It's been another busy month!  How is it already September?!?  This year, today marks a special occasion as it's the year the "19 Years Later" epilogue takes place in the Harry Potter series.  Perhaps, that's why I'm more aware of the date.  (At least this time around I remembered to post on the first of the month!)  For those of you asking, I haven't made the 2018 calendars yet, but I'll be working on those soon.  In the meantime, here's my free September printable calendar!

Back from Disneyland and D23

Hi friends!  As you know, we've been crazy busy lately.  Eliot and I have returned from our trip to California for the D23 Expo and Disneyland.  We've actually been home for almost 2 weeks now, but we've been working on getting caught up on orders for Happily Ever Hatter.  We're still incredibly busy with orders, and we got really behind when I got pink eye again.  Thankfully, we're almost caught up.  We've decided to close our shop to general orders for the month of August so we can get fully caught up and focus on pre-prders for some of our new designs.  (Yay for new designs!!!)

However, I did want to swing by quickly to post about our trip!  We had a great time, but it was really, really, really hot.  Eliot and I are used to it being hot and humid in Maine, but this was something else.  It was really hot and we were unmotivated to do much.  In hindsight, we both agree that we should have gone out for the D23 Expo and then returned home.  We then could have spent a week at Disneyland some other time when it was a little cooler.  But, it was fun to be there for Disneyland's 62nd Birthday and to see the first official show of the return of Fantasmic!!!  That was a lot of fun!

I did make two bucket lists for our trip, one for Disneyland and one for the D23 Expo, but I ran out of time to post them before we left.  I had every intention of doing it, but Eliot and I pulled an all nighter the night before we left and we still didn't finish all of the ears we wanted to.  I couldn't take the time to type them up into a blog post.  However, I took the time to make the lists, so instead, I'll post the lists and the results together in one post so you can see what we were up to!

I'm hoping that I'll be able to stop by more often this month since we're toning it down with our shop, but I guess we'll see how it turns out.  I've got a goal list for August that includes preparing to launch two other business endeavors, working on the house and trying to enjoy a little bit of summer and some fun in the sun activities!  I guess we'll see how this pans out!  Just know that I'll be here as often as I can.  If I'm not here, hopefully that means I'm finally out enjoying the summer and nice weather and getting a little bit of relaxation in!!!  °o°

August 2017 Calendar

Hello August!  I can't believe how fast this summer is going by.  I feel like I just posted my July calendar and now it's already August.  (Christmas is going to be here before I know it... Ahh!!!)  In fact, I totally forgot that today was the first and that I had to post my calendar until it suddenly donned on me at about 10:00 pm tonight.  So without further ado, here it is!!!

Pink Eye: Part 2

At the moment, I can't seem to catch a break.  Right when Eliot and I had the busiest week for our ear business, I was diagnosed with conjunctivitis right in the middle of it.  For those of you keeping score: Pink Eye: 2, Melissa: 0.

Fortunately, I realized that I had it pretty quickly on.  I woke up Wednesday with pain and a very watery right eye. I tried using a cold compress like I usually do, and that didn't work.  By the time I was driving to work, it suddenly dawned on me that it was probably pink eye.  As the work day wore on, it was becoming more clear-while my vision was becoming less clear.  I dashed out of work as soon as we were done with our last patient, rushed over to the walk in clinic, and was officially diagnosed about 45 minutes later.  Lucky for me, the pharmacy stayed open until 8:00 pm and I made it over there with about 10 minutes to spare!

Thankfully, Eliot was more sympathetic to the "diseased rodent" this time around.  Instead of teasing me, he told me to sit on the couch, rest and not touch anything.  Then, he stayed up all night working on as many ears as he could.  He only got an hour of sleep before getting up to go to work for a few hours.  At least he was flying out to California for the weekend (to visit his family) and he could sleep on the plane.

So... now it's Monday night.  This is the first time I've been on my computer since Wednesday.  It's the first time the light from the computer hasn't completely bothered my eyes.  (It's not feeling too great the longer I sit here though.)  I'm still having trouble driving at night with oncoming lights, but I'm hoping that'll go away soon.

As for the ears, this is going to be a busy few days before our trip to California for Disneyland and the D23 Expo.  We leave on the 13th, so stay tuned.  Hopefully, I'll at least be able to pop back over to do my bucket list between now and then!  °o°

July 2017 Calendar

Happy July!!!  I can't believe that this year is officially half over!!!  I don't know about you, but it's flown right by for me!  I'm so excited about the warm weather and sunshine though!  (It's nice to have the sunlight around longer too!)  I'm definitely going to enjoy it while it lasts!  Speaking of a new month, here's my free printable calendar!

New Priorities and Beginnings

Hi friends!  I'm finally sitting down to write a post that's long overdue.  I'm sure you've noticed my lack of posting as of late.  In fact, I've only posted 31 entries for this entire year, and we're just about at the halfway point.  This is not what I had envisioned for my blog this year, but as they say "life happens."

My reason for writing is to let you all in on what's been happening around here.  Those of you who follow my blog over on Facebook and Instagram probably have noticed that I haven't been on there much either.  The other day, I wrote a post on my personal Facebook page to let all of our friends and family know that Eliot and I are both fine, since I haven't even been on that much either.

So, let's cut to the chase.  There's both good news and bad news.  The bad news: I probably won't get to write much over here.  I might be able to a little more often, but I won't get to be over here nearly as much as I'd like to.  The good news: all of this is because of new priorities and new beginnings.  It's all good things.

I'll go into more detail soon... really, I promise.  But the overall gist is that Eliot and I have been incredibly busy with Happily Ever Hatter.  Our business has grown exponentially over the past few months, and since our return from our trip to Walt Disney World for the Princess Half in February, we've been swamped.  If we haven't been at our jobs, we've most likely been home working on mouse ears.  I've lost count of how many we've mailed out in the past few months... it's been a lot.  But we're really excited about the direction our business is heading in!

Obviously, something had to give- and that something has been my social life and this blog.  Eliot and I have more recently started to try to give ourselves little breaks, but I haven't seen my family and/or friends in a while.  We're working on that.

As for my blog, that was an obvious choice.  I just don't have time to write.  Most of my blog posts can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to write.  And I simply don't have that time right now.  However, I know it's not forever.  I still have a list of posts that I plan to write.  I just don't know when that'll be.  Probably long after it's relevant... but that's ok.  I'm going to do what I can, when I can.

Anyways, I'll give you more details soon.  I just really wanted to let you all know what's been going on.  I'm very excited about this new chapter in our lives!  I think it's going to help get us to where we want to eventually be.  °o°

Happy Birthday Eliot and Donald!

Happy Birthday to my two favorite quacks: my husband Eliot and Donald Duck!!!

Last year, Eliot was actually able to wish Donald a Happy Birthday in person while we were at Disneyland.  We waited with a bunch of other guests until Donald came out for his meet and greet and then we all sang Happy Birthday to him.  It was definitely an experience I'll always remember!

After that, Eliot and I stood in a pretty long line to meet Donald.  When Eliot told Donald it was his birthday too he got really excited.  It was a really sweet moment.  Eliot got an extra "Happy Birthday" celebration button and Donald held it out while they took a photo together.  (Of course, I had to get a picture too!)  Happy Birthday Donald!

Eliot and I don't have any big plans for this weekend, but I'm sure we'll at least go out to dinner to celebrate!  Happy Birthday babe! °o°

June 2017 Calendar

Happy June everyone!  I can't believe it's already June.  In fact, other than knowing that yesterday was my Dad's birthday, it totally escaped me that it was a new month.  I thought about the calendar, and then by the end of the work day it had completely slipped my mind.  Here it is!  I'm so sorry for the delay!

There's Magic, Tomorrow...

Tomorrow, tomorrow, there's magic, tomorrow.  You're only a day away!!!  Tomorrow morning, before 6:00 am, Elissa and I will be on our way to California!!!  (Don't worry, Eliot's going too, he just had to work an extra day!)  I'm so excited to return to Disneyland!  I've missed it since last June!  I'm also ready to get this long distance running thing behind me.  Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend here we come!!!

As always, if you see Eliot and me, please don't be afraid to say hello!  We love to meet fellow Disney fans!  I promise we don't bite!  (Unless you happen to be a candy apple.  Then, I make no promises!)  However, if you're running by us in the race, I probably won't be sociable.  I apologize in advance if I seem stand offish.  These races are going to take a lot of mental strength- especially after the injuries I've been trying to overcome since Princess.  (More on that later...)  I'll be keeping my eye on the prize!

Even if you aren't walking in Walt's footsteps this weekend, you can still virtually follow along with the fun from the comfort of your own home.  If you aren't already, you can follow My Disney Life on Facebook for pictures, posts and updates.  I'm also over on Instagram as @MyDisneyLifeBlog if you want to follow the photo fun there!  In the past, I tend to be more active on Instagram during our Disney trips.  I like to post photos "live" from the parks.  Don't have an Instagram account?  If you follow this link, you should be able to see all of my photos online!

Last trip, I didn't post any videos live on Facebook- mostly because our seating for certain shows was terrible (Fantasmic) or there were kids talking through most of the show (Rivers of Light).  However, I'm hoping to post a few videos this trip!  If you are following me on Facebook, you should get an alert when I'm live.  If you can't tune in to the live feed, you should be able to watch the videos at your own convenience if you go to my Facebook page.  Hopefully, this will allow more people to see my videos!

In the meantime, we have a college student to move off campus this evening, more last minute packing to do, and a really early flight to make tomorrow!!!  Stay tuned for Disney photo and video spam... See ya real soon!  °o°
