I've Created a Monster

I wasn't planning to pop in today, but after what transpired, I knew that I had to.  I've created a bit of a monster... but he's a happy festive one.  I got a bit of a surprise this afternoon... and I thought it would be fun to share it with you.  Plus, it's been a while since I've been able to blog in real time.  The past few weeks, it feels like I've either been writing things ahead of time, or playing catch up.  So it's refreshing to have two days in a row where I've been writing in the moment!  Now, about that monster...

I've often joked that Daddy and I created a holiday monster with Eliot.  I used to be the one doing all of our holiday decorating when we lived together in Woburn.  I started out decorating my first apartment, in Marlborough where I lived alone.  I'd decorate my tree and get all of my holiday stuff set up.  I even bought some lights to string around the railing on my small balcony.  Then, when Eliot and I moved in together in Woburn, I was still the one getting everything decorated for all of the holidays.

And I come by it naturally.  Mom decorates the entire house inside, and Daddy goes above and beyond outside.  For years, his collection of twinkling lights, pathway markers, blow molds and inflatables has grown.  It's become such a big display that one year when he was busy and he hadn't gotten much out, people in my small hometown literally thought he was sick or something was drastically wrong.

The first Christmas Eliot and I spent together was the one after our wedding back in 2012.  That was the first time he truly saw the depths at which my family decorated for Christmas.  And I think that was the year that everything changed...

At one point before that, I vividly remember having a conversation with Eliot and his sisters about people putting their lights up Thanksgiving weekend.  At that moment in time, Eliot thought it was too early to do it.  I had to explain to him that some families do Thanksgiving and Christmas at the same time since it's harder to travel during the holidays.  He said it made sense, but I could tell he still thought it was early.

My how times have changed.  It didn't take too long before Eliot wanted to make his own Christmas light display second to none.  He never put them up when he was a kid since his family is Jewish.  But he's fully embraced these traditions of my family, and we both figure it works since Hanukkah is also the festival of lights.

As our own Christmas decor collection has grown through the years, Eliot has been itching to go outside earlier and earlier to decorate.  The past few years, he's wanted to go out in October when it's still warm out.  I've kept him in check since we have quite a bit of Halloween decorations to put out too, but the second that Halloween is over, watch out.  He's ready to rock and roll full speed ahead.  And I completely agree that it makes sense to do it when it's still warmer, even if it feels early.

Hence, the reason for this post.  Eliot came home from his weekly Saturday trip to the post office and told me that he was going outside to "do some work".  I assumed that he was going to be using our leaf mulcher to chop up some leaves.  It was a gorgeous day here in Maine with the temperatures in the mid-70°s.

About an hour after he went outside, he popped in and told me to come out when I had a minute.  I was bouncing between housework and computer work, but I went outside a few minutes later once I gathered that he was anxious to show me something.

I walked out into a Christmas wonderland.  Eliot had put up garland around the posts on our front porch.  They wound down the railing of the front steps.  I stepped out onto our Christmas doormat.  Then, I noticed that he'd also put out four of our smaller inflatables and the blue net lights that we put on the ground to make a "pond" display.

It looked great and we had fun walking around and admiring his hard work.  I went back inside to work on a few more things, but he spent another hour or so adding more to the display.  He strung more garland on the porch and experimented with some lights.  (We're going to change those around since he ran out of lights.)  He also added another blinking set to one of the larger trees near our driveway.  Finally, he ran a cord up to the end of our driveway so he could put lights on our mailbox.

This is only a very small fraction of the stuff that we have, but it's a start.  I hate how it gets dark so early this time of year, but I also love this time of year because you can see everyone's Christmas lights twinkling at night.  It's all how you look at things.

I like to joke that I've created a monster... but I'm more thankful than anything.  I'm glad that Eliot has fully embraced all of the fun and joy that decorating for the holidays brings.  He's my festive holiday monster and I wouldn't have it any other way!  °o°

A Colorful 2021

Most people are taking their Christmas trees down this time of year.  Yesterday, for the first time in like four years, Eliot took ours down too.  And then he put up our new one.

He's been waiting over a week to put the new one up, and I insisted that we give the old tree one last Christmas and New Year's hoorah.  We're not getting rid of the other one, but after four straight years of service, it's temporarily retired and is resting inside of a nice tree bag.  (We're planning to use that one in our bedroom seasonally.)

Our new Twinkly tree has it's own LED light shows that are controlled by an app on our phones.  It's a lot like our outdoor Christmas lights where we can control them... so we keep them up all year.  Who doesn't love twinkling lights?  This new tree has settings for single colors, patterns, twinkles, shimmers, other holiday presets... and it even has a way to make customized designs.  Eliot's already designed one for Halloween.  Last night before bed we made one with San Jose Sharks colors for when they play.

The best part was that it was totally meant to be ours.  Eliot and I have been talking about getting another one, if we found it after Christmas when it was on sale.  (We also have the first generation of a Twinkly tree that we got 2 years ago.)  This one was on sale for only $108 when we happened across the display model at our local Walmart a few days before Christmas.  This was a steal considering it was usually $289.  Eliot immediately went to find the nearest associate, who allowed Eliot to take it apart and put it in a tree bag that we also purchased.  It was our Christmas present to ourselves after a tumultuous 2020 and a year of hard work with both of our businesses.

My favorite part of our new tree is that it has a rainbow fade setting.  Now, I can watch rainbows reflecting off of our walls every night.  It's going to be a colorful 2021.  °o°

Fun Find: Disney Magic Holiday

Hi friends!  It's been a busy week, and going to be another busy weekend here in the Cady household.  But, before I enter the zone of ear making, I wanted to share a quick Fun Find Friday with you!  I've been waiting to share this for a few weeks, and now it finally feels like it's an appropriate time!  This year, Lowe's is carrying a special Disney Christmas lights collection called Disney Magic Holiday!

I'd heard about them online, and of course Eliot and I were anxious to see them in person.  We went to our Lowe's store back in mid-October to find this stunning display.

I absolutely love this entire collection and am hoping we'll be able to add some items to our Christmas Light collection for next year!  Here are a few of my personal favorites:

I love this Countdown to Christmas.  It would be perfect to project on our garage!

I absolutely love this Neon Mickey Mouse Sculpture!

And of course, I love the Neon Minnie Mouse Sculpture!

This little Olaf Sculpture is really cute too!

I totally have a thing about street lamps, so I was really excited when the collection included this Pre-Lit Lamp Post Sculpture.  It projects little Mickeys inside the top!

This Pre-Lit Tree Sculpture is really cute too!  However, I wish the Mickey lights were on the outside of the Christmas tree instead of the inside!

I love these pastel colored LED Mickey Lights

Lowe's also has these bright colored Mickey LED Lights!

There are also icicle lights, regular Christmas lights and light nets in the collection.  (I'm obviously more partial to the Mickey shaped stuff though!)  In addition to those, there are a few more designs that are sold in stores, but appear to be sold out online.  My favorite of those designs was the swirling Mickey Mouse protections!  (You can see the video I took of these lights in action here.)

I don't know about you, but Eliot and I are always looking to add a little bit of Disney magic to our Christmas light display.  These are on our Christmas wish list, and I'm sure we'll be going to Lowe's right after Christmas to see if they're on sale!  °o°

Depressing Disney Week

Well, this has certainly been a depressing Disney week.  Within the past week, Disney theme park fans have had to say goodbye to numerous theme park favorites- some temporarily and some which are now gone forever.

I have to admit that it leaves me feeling a little bit glum.  There were closures at both theme parks, most notably this past weekend at Disneyland.  With the Star Wars section of the park set to start construction anytime now some attractions were forced to close for the next year or so.  Unfortunately, it's probably only a matter of time before the same thing happens to Hollywood Studios.

Speaking of Hollywood Studios, the first victim of future expansions happened last Wednesday when we said goodbye to the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights.  I've been lucky enough to see the lights multiple times during our trips over New Years.  (The lights have been a part of Disney World since 1995.)

The Osborne lights were the only closing attraction that I grew up with.  However, as sad as I am that they've "been retired", I'm not upset about it... yet.  Some part of me feels like the lights will find a new home.  Disney has spent so much time updating them to LEDs, and creating the dancing programming.  Something in my gut says it's not over yet.  And I really hope my gut feeling is right.

Disneyland had a lot of changes over last weekend.  In fact, some park guests were dubbing their weekend the "Goodbye Tour" in which they went from attraction to attraction saying goodbye to their favorites.  One of the biggest casualties of adding a Star Wars section was Big Thunder Ranch.

Big Thunder Ranch consisted of a petting zoo including goats, donkeys, a horse and more.  There was also a barbecue restaurant and a jamboree.  The ranch section of the park was tucked behind Big Thunder Mountain Raildroad and it was a nice place to unwind and catch your breath.  In fact, I didn't even know it existed until my most recent trip to Disneyland.  (I don't think we even went over there my first time!)

I enjoyed seeing the animals and I'm sure I would have loved the food offerings at the restaurant.  They used to have egg decorating and pumpkin carving over there during the Easter and Halloween holidays.  That would have been cool to see.  Elissa is devastated about Big Thunder Ranch closing.  I'm not devastated, but it is sad to see another small part of what makes Disneyland Disneyland go.  And I do wish I'd seen the "goat run" at least once.  Thankfully, the animals all have nice homes to move to!

Another casualty of building Star Wars land, is the temporary closure of the Rivers of America.  Translated, that means the Disneyland Railroad, canoes, Mark Twain Riverboat, Sailing Ship Columbia, Tom Sawyer's Island, and Fantasmic will all be gone to accommodate construction.  I have to admit, I'm a big fan of the train so this is a bit depressing for me.  I also love Fantasmic and it's sad it'll be gone for a year or more.

Plus, this leaves Disneyland with less space per person in the park.  Disneyland is already very crowded on a good day.  Eliot's so annoyed about all the construction and the closures that he's vowed not to go there again until it's all over- except for the pre-determined trips we've planned and are hoping to go on over the next two years.

However, there are a few pluses.  The new construction on the Rivers of America looks gorgeous.  Disney released a rendered image of concept art yesterday.  It appears that when the train returns, the waterfront will have new waterfalls with an elevated train track.  I love waterfalls!  Also, during the construction, Disneyland plans to have two of the trains stopped at stations so guests can see the trains up close and learn more about how they run.  My Papa loved trains so much.  I'm excited to experience this and to take a picture with one of the trains.

The saddest goodbye for me was the ending of Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular.  I posted a fun find with Genie's jokes last Friday.  Even a few days later, I have to admit that I'm still sad when I think about it.  (More on that soon...)  But, Walt Disney himself said that "Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world."  And while we are all sad to say goodbye to some fan favorites, building Star Wars themed lands definitely fits into that philosophy.

"We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths." ~Walt Disney  °o°

Fun Find: Christmas Light Displays "Let It Go"

I wanted to share another fun find with you!  Usually I'd wait until Friday to share it. Instead, I'm going to break my own "rules" and share it today.  (Maybe they're more "guidelines" anyways.)  Plus, there are only so many more Fridays until Christmas...

2013 Christmas Light Display
Eliot is a huge fan of Christmas light displays.  He never used to be; he's Jewish and didn't grow up covering his house in a ka-gillon lights.  When we first started dating, he even asked me why people turned their Christmas lights on the night of Thanksgiving. He thought that might be too soon.  (Really?!?)  I told him that was considered the "official" start of the holiday season.

2013 Christmas Light Display
Boy, have times changed.  This year, Eliot actually asked me if it would be alright to start putting out our Christmas lights in August.  You read that correctly... August.  Not to turn them on, but to have them started.  Thankfully, I convinced him to hold off until October.  Although, we had quite the Halloween light display too.

Nowadays, Eliot's obsessed with lights, inflatable characters and designing our displays.  I'm ok with it; I'm glad he's embraced the fun that goes into it.  My parents bought him a light show set last year for Christmas- now our lights can sing and "dance" to the music.  We look at Christmas lights as soon as they're on the shelves in Wal-Mart.  (Usually, sometime in late September/early October.)  He helped my Dad put up the lights on my parents' house last year.  (Mom and Dad have a lot of lights and people in town drive by just to see them- but that's another story...)  This year, Eliot has a game plan to go to Home Depot and Wal-Mart with my Dad the day after Christmas so they can get lights half off.  He's even saved the gift card he got for his birthday for this very occasion.  (Daddy, we have created a monster.)

Last year, Eliot discovered the Great Christmas Light Fight show on ABC.  (Ruh-roh!) Our Christmas light displays are no where near as cool as those ones but it's given us a lot of ideas for the future.  (I repeat: ruh-roh!)  Eliot's already designing things in his head.  Of course, I'm not immune to it; I've got my own ideas for Disney themed yard displays.  I'm sure as our collection grows, it will definitely be a sight to see!

It's a lot of fun to drive around and see everyones houses all lit up.  However, if you can't get out to enjoy a good display, there are so many super cool light displays posted on Youtube.  Of course, the ultimate 2014 holiday display would have to include Frozen!  Here are two videos I love featuring "Let it Go" from Frozen.

I love all of the snowflakes on the house in the first video!  They remind me of Cinderella Castle with way they twinkle.  (I told Eliot we have to get twinkle lights someday.)  Also, you've gotta love the cactus in the middle!

Watch the beginning of the second video closely.  Did you catch Elsa on the sides of the house at the beginning?  Cool!  Also, is that Elsa singing in the window underneath the center underneath the tree on the roof?  I can't tell.  I love the sparkling lights on the entire house.  (Must find sparkling twinkle lights!)

Let the (eventual) "Cady Christmas Light Spectacular" planning begin... "Let it Go!"  °o°

Catching Up

Hi Friends!  I'm back after a short hiatus.  Eliot and I had a craft fair this past Saturday. Then Sunday we put up our Christmas Lights.  And on top of all that, I'm still sick.  I thought that I'd gotten the advantage over my cold, but it seems to have manifested itself into a sinus infection/head cold.  The good news is that I switched medicine and I seem to be back on the mend, again!  After about 10 days of this, I'm really ready to be healthy Melissa again!

I haven't written about our daily adventures in a while, so I wanted to do a quick recap of everything from Thanksgiving until now.  I feel like I'm playing catch up!  Here we go:

We had Thanksgiving at my parents house this year with my Mom's family.  It was a great day filled with lots of yummy food.  I love getting together with my family and my cousins and I always share some laughs together.  Eliot and I even dressed Eeyore up for the occasion!

Hanukkah also fell over Thanksgiving which kind of threw us for a loop.  We worked really hard to get our Thanksgiving decorations up.  Then Eliot and I were away for 4 nights of Hanukkah since we stayed the whole Thanksgiving weekend with my parents. By the time we got home, Hanukkah was half over.  We discussed decorating for it, but Eliot didn't want to bother.  Then, I got sick the day after we returned home, so I wouldn't have been able to decorate anyways.  Sadly, Hanukkah passed with no decorating this year.  But next year, Hanukkah falls in mid-December (December 16-24) so we'll be ready to have a giant Christmukkah celebration!

We did get our Hanukah gifts from Eliot's family.  We both got a Mickey or Minnie cell phone charm/zipper pull.  Eliot also got a keychain with his Hebrew name on it.  I got a really cute "M" necklace with a super small Mickey head on it.  I've looked at the monogram Disney necklaces a lot, but I've never gotten myself one.  This will go nicely with the rest of my Mickey Mouse jewelry!

Leading up to the craft fair, I had a lot of scarves to make so I decided to have a "Once Upon a Time" Marathon last week.  My best friend Katie had been sick over Thanksgiving and she told me that she got hooked on it through Netflix.  (Thanks to moi.) I decided that it was the perfect show to re-watch while I was feeling sick, and it was great background television for scarf making!  I made about 20 scarves in two days from the comfort of my couch!

The rest of the week consisted of me helping Eliot make more soaps.  We ended up sending out a bunch of the soaps and scarves for his mother to sell in California.  Then we made more with the new scents that we got.  I also worked on more Mickey rhinestone earrings for Eliot, as well as some more Frozen inspired snowflake hair clips.

The craft fair itself went pretty well.  We didn't do as well as we'd hoped that we would, but it was still fun.  The kids loved the soaps and I got lots of compliments on my scarves.  We're hoping that next year we can participate in a few more fairs.  And I'm also planning to add some of the leftover scarves to Etsy at some point!

On Sunday, Eliot and my Dad put up our Christmas Lights.  I helped with a few of the lights, so I should probably give myself a little credit.  As I've mentioned before, this is the first year that we've had an entire yard and house to decorate.  I've got a few photos from the initial decorating.  (We're planning to take some more photos and videos, so I'll make sure to add those once I take them.)

I put lights on our back deck that we're planning to keep up year round.  They're red, orange, blue, green and yellow.  I figure that they'll be bright and fun colors for the summer as well.  After all, who doesn't like pretty lights and a cozy backyard barbecue? (Ooh and don't forget the s'mores!!!)

This is the side of our house.  (It looks a lot better at night when you can see the lights.)

And here's the front!  We have a Mickey, Minnie and snowman inflatable front and center. We also added a few more lights since this photo was taken.  This is a panoramic picture so it's a little bit skewed.  We're planning to add our tinsel penguins and flamingo soon. And you also can't see the wishing well.  I'll work on that.  (It's really hard to take a picture of the entire house from our front yard.  I might have to go to our neighbors across the street.)

Over the past few days, we've also started to bring our Christmas decorations up from the basement.  I'm hoping to get them up in the next few days and over this weekend as long as I'm feeling better.  I love this time of year and all of the fun Disney decorations that we have!  Stay tuned for a fun photo tour!!!  There's a lot of Disney stuff to see!!!  °o°
